Right to Information/Information Privacy
The Queensland Government has introduced a new legislative framework to encourage greater access to government information. This framework incorporates the following Acts:
- A Right to Information Act 2009 with a clearly stated object of providing a right to access to information held by the government unless, on balance, it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information; and
- A Information Privacy Act 2009 to provide a framework for the fair collection and handling of personal information. For the next twelve months, this legislation will only apply to local government for access and amendment rights to a person’s own personal information.
This legislation replaces the Freedom of Information Act 1992, and is effective from 1 July, 2009.
