Road Facts
Council’s vast network of roads will be a familiar route for the residents of the region who travel them daily. Stretching from Cunningham’s Gap in the west to Numinbah Gap in the east, the network consists of approximately 1800km of road.
Managed by the Works and Operations Department, 120 employees work through a road maintenance program that consists of heavy maintenance gangs that work progressively through the region on a rotational basis grading gravel roads, gravel shoulders and fixing major pavement failures.
These gangs are also supplemented by patrol gangs that undertake pothole patching works, sign maintenance and other general maintenance such as drainage or guideposts.
Council also has two bridge gangs that are responsible for the maintenance of approximately 140 bridges of which 105 are timber bridges.
Staff operate from depots based at Boonah and Beaudesert with outlying depots at Canungra, Rathdowney and Tamborine Mountain.
The continual improvement of council's road network is one of council’s main priorities.Councils must strike a balance between the community's ideal road network and what the community can afford to pay to retain and develop that network.
