In March 2013 Council commenced preparation of the new Scenic Rim Planning Scheme under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009. A draft planning scheme was submitted to the State government for first State interest review in February 2016. In July 2017 the new Planning Act 2016 commenced and Council resolved to progress the development of the new Scenic Rim Planning Scheme under the requirements of this new Act.
The new Planning Scheme will replace the existing planning schemes that apply to the former Beaudesert Shire, Boonah Shire and Ipswich City council areas within the Scenic Rim region, and ultimately govern the region's future development.
The intent of the new Planning Scheme is to provide greater consistency and coordination to land use planning regulation and policy across the region, whilst appropriately recognising the unique characteristics of localities and areas. It will aim to appropriately balance:
- the protection and enhancement of values, lifestyle and characteristics that the community enjoys; and
- the social and economic development and growth of the Region.
The new Planning Scheme will be prepared in accordance with State Government legislation that regulates planning and development, including the new Planning Act 2016.
Significant consultation with the Scenic Rim community and stakeholders will be undertaken at various periods throughout the Planning Scheme preparation process. Details of consultation timing and opportunities will be released at the commencement of each significant phase of the project.
