Process to formally name the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens

In September 2020, the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens Inc (the Association) informed Council of its desire to change the name of the Gardens to the "Tamborine Mountain Regional Botanic Gardens in the Scenic Rim".

Council has never formally named the land, currently registered as "Lot 50 on RP155199" on Forsythia Drive, Tamborine Mountain.

The Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens was established on Lot 50 in 1983 by volunteers, in consultation with the then Beaudesert Shire Council, and that name has been used colloquially since.

At Council's Ordinary Meeting on 27 April 2021 a report was presented that detailed the request from the Association to have the Gardens recognised as a truly regional gardens. Noting that the Gardens is registered as a regional botanic gardens with Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand; and the Association would like regional to be included in the name.

The report also clarified that, as the owner of the land, Council is responsible for its naming and as per its Naming of Roads and Places Policy Council would commence a period of public consultation.

The consultation period was open from 13 May until 16 June 2021.

Community members across the Scenic Rim were provided with an opportunity to provide feedback via an online survey or written submissions. Advertisements were placed in local newspapers.

Council is required to validate all responses, one response per person. The data collected will inform a report to Council in the coming months on the formal naming of the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens.

Council's jurisdiction is only to the naming of the land, in this case "Lot 50 on RP155199" not the naming of the operations. Under the terms of management, tenants of Council-owned land are responsible for the name of the business, organisation or service that is operating on the land.

More information will be provided when the community consultation report is tabled with Council.
