Scenic Rim’s business community has welcomed significant safety upgrades in Beaudesert and Canungra, following Council’s success in securing funding through the Queensland Government’s $40 million Secure Communities Partnership Program.

Council received $150,700 in contributions for two CCTV projects worth more than $300,000, aimed at improving safety and confidence in local business precincts.

Mayor Tom Sharp said the projects reflect strong collaboration between Council, Queensland Police and local business chambers.

“Council is proud to work alongside our local business community to create safer, more vibrant town centres,” Cr Sharp said.

“These CCTV upgrades will help deter crime, protect local traders, and build confidence for residents, visitors and investors alike.”

In Beaudesert, new cameras will be installed at an estimated cost of $162,800, jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government.

In Canungra, cameras will be installed at an estimated cost of $138,600, also with equal contributions from both partners.

Business leaders have applauded the investment, describing it as a proactive step toward strengthening local resilience.

Beaudesert Chamber of Commerce President John Powell said the chamber's members fully endorsed the initiative.

“This project will strengthen our community by providing greater safety and security for businesses and residents,” Mr Powell said.

“The CCTV network will act as a deterrent to criminals and assist law enforcement in identifying offenders.

"We thank both Council and the State Government for making this happen.”

Nambok Intharangsy, from the Canungra Chamber of Commerce Safety and Resilience Sub-committee, said the sub-committee was elated that Council had successfully secured the funding.

“Local businesses and residents have long called for this investment to help keep our town secure,” she said.

“The community couldn’t be happier to see this outcome and is proud to see their little town building a safer, stronger future.”

The CCTV upgrades will:

  • deter criminal behaviour by increasing visibility and surveillance
  • protect businesses against theft, vandalism and damage
  • support police investigations with 360-degree, high-quality coverage, and
  • boost confidence and foot traffic in local shopping areas.

The Secure Communities Partnership Program is an initiative of the Queensland Government’s Small and Family Business First Action Statement.

Round 1 of the program has delivered $9.6 million for 42 projects across Queensland, supporting practical safety measures such as CCTV, security lighting and alarm systems.
