Asbestos is a building material that was extensively used in Australia from the 1940s until the 1980s, most commonly in cement sheeting, pipes, roofing and guttering.

Asbestos becomes a health hazard when fibres of breathable size become airborne and are then inhaled, causing asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Council has strict policies and procedures guiding the disposal of asbestos at Council facilities, including:

• Asbestos quantities must be wetted down and double-wrapped in thick plastic in manageable sizes, as the customer will have to handle it themselves.
• Disposal will generally be required prior to 3pm.
• Disposal of commercial quantities of asbestos must be accompanied by a Waste Transport Certificate.

For your safety and the safety of the community:

• Don’t store or reuse any asbestos materials.
• Don’t dispose of asbestos waste in a domestic rubbish bin, skip or Council waste collections.
• Don’t dump asbestos waste - fines apply.

Chemical disposal is available approximately once every 12 months. 

ChemClear - Agvet chemical colletion program - collects surplus agricultural and veterinary chemicals. Register through ChemClear to participate in the program: chemclear.org.au/register-your-chemical.

Please do not bring chemicals to our facilities outside these collections times.

Deceased animals are only accepted at our Central Waste and Resource Recovery Facility located at Bromelton.

Animals that can be disposed of include:

• Cattle
• Sheep
• Pigs
• Horses
• Donkeys

If you bring in a deceased horse or donkey, you must provide a certificate from a veterinarian clearing the animal of Hendra virus.

Council organises removal of deceased animals from parks, roads and footpaths if they are a traffic hazard or causing offence or nuisance. Call Council on 07 5540 5111.

Eligible containers are non-returnable metal and plastic containers marked with the DrumMuster eligible container logo which may be applied to the container either as a sticker, printed as part of the label, or embossed into the container material.

When you arrive, please advise the Waste Service Officer on site that you have DrumMuster drum to be disposed of so they can make sure they are handled and stored appropriately. 

All containers must be triple rinsed with lids removed before drop off. Failure to do this may result in your containers not being accepted.

Commercial disposal charges apply to returns in excess of 250 kilograms. Drums should be wrapped in manageable sizes as they will need to be unloaded by hand and placed in the designated DrumMuster area.

The program will not accept petroleum or liquid chlorine containers that are used for non-agricultural purposes.

Engine oil (25L or less) can be dropped off at Council's waste and resource recovery facilities at Boonah, Canungra, Central (Bromelton), Peak Crossing, Rathdowny, Tambourine Mountain.

Three easy steps to recycle engine oil safely

1. Transport your engine oil in a sealed oil container to your nearest waste and recovery faciilty

2. Decant the engine oil from the container into the reservoir provided.

3. Dispose of your empty engine oil containers in the bins provided. If you are unsure ask the Waste Services Officer on site.

E-waste covers discarded electronics and electrical components, that is, things that you can plug-in or that take batteries, for example, kitchen appliances, computers and toys.

E-waste contains toxic chemicals that can pollute, such as lead, mercury and arsenic, and valuable resources that can be  extracted, such as precious metals.

This service is free to residents and includes the following types of items:

Television, Printer, Scanner, Photocopier, Flat Screen Monitors, Laptop, Docking Station, Keyboard, Computer Mouse, Palm Pilot /Hand Held Devices, External Modem, Peripherals, PABX Systems, Data Projector, Switch/Hub Devices, Server, Main Frame, Router, Tape Drives, Server Racking, Cables, Telephones, Mobile Phone, Sandwich Maker, Electric Heater, Microwave, Kettle, Camera, VCR Player, DVD Player, Hi-Fi System, Speakers, Video Recorder, iPod /MP3 Player, Toaster, Vacuum Cleaner, lron, Typewriter.

This includes:

• grass cuttings and garden clippings,
• bushes, shrubs; and
• tree branches, stumps, trunks or root balls (less than 40cm diameter).

Please separate your green waste items from other wastes so they can be stockpiled separately and mulched.

Note: Mulch is no longer available at any Waste and Resource Recovery Facility. 

Household batteries are not accepted- these commonly cause of landfill and waste truck fires. Take your household batteries to an Aldi, Battery World or Woolworths supermarket near you, all of which offer recycling services for household batteries, free of charge.

Mobile Muster is a not-for-profit program funded by handset and accessory manufacturers and network carriers. They want to see old phones turned into brand new technology and not ending up in landfills and creating environmental hazards.

Paint can be disposed of free of charge at Boonah, Canungra and Central (Beaudesert) transfer stations through the Paintback program.

Paintback takes unwanted paint and packaging and responsibly disposes of it, diverting it from landfill and waterways. Containers  are recycled and waste paint is treated in a number of ways, including energy recovery for solvent and liquid/solid separation for water-based paint.

Paintback accepts up to 100 litres per visit, stowed in containers of 20 litres or less. Paintback cannot take industrial and specialist  coatings and other tints and surface treatments.

Paintback accepts:

• Interior and exterior architectural paint
• Deck coatings and floor paints
• Primers
• Undercoats and sealers
• Stains and shellacs
• Varnishes and urethanes (single component)
• Wood coatings and packaging.

Fire ants are a highly invasive species. Council’s waste and resource recovery facilities have strict protocols about bringing soil and other items in from a Fire Ant Restricted Zone.

Under the Biosecurity Act 2014, individuals and organisations have a general biosecurity obligation to take all reasonable steps to ensure they do not spread fire ants.

Restricted items include:

• Soil (fill, clay, scrapings, topsoil, potting media and any other material from the ground).
• Mulch, manure, bark, hay, pot plants, potting mix, turf, gravels, poultry litter and green waste that has been stockpiled before disposal.
• NOTE: Freshly cut green waste (same day as disposal) is not a restricted item and can be disposed of at all sites.

Restricted items from Restricted Zone 1 can only be taken to a Waste and Resource Recovery Facility in Zones 1 or 2.

Restricted items from Zone 2 can only be taken to a Waste and Resource Recovery Facility in Zone 2.

Restricted Zone 1 suburbs:

White goods - includes refrigeration, air-conditioning units, freezers and vehicles with intact air conditioner systems.

Charges apply to check and degas the units in accordance with current environmental legislation.

This includes asbestos products, dead animals and other types of waste that may require special burial at the landfill.
