Koala Habitat Protection

Legislation and Policy

New planning changes involving koala habitat have been introduced by the State Government in association with the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy. These changes affect the Scenic Rim Council area.

The Nature Conservation and Other Legislation (Koala Protection) Amendment Regulation 2020 commenced on 7 February 2020 and introduces koala habitat protection mapping. This change brings about a significant amendments to the Planning Regulation 2017.

Koala Priority Areas and Koala Habitat Areas are now mapped in the Scenic Rim Region. All proposed development which includes the interfering with koala habitat in these mapped areas must consider the new legislation when determining whether an application is required.
