Serving the community: upgraded courts reopen in Canungra

Getting into the swing of the tennis court reopening celebrations are Councillor Stephen Moriarty and Scenic Rim Mayor Tom Sharp.
Tennis returned to Canungra in full swing on Saturday as locals gathered to celebrate the official reopening of the Moriarty Park Tennis Courts, following a major upgrade.
Sport and Recreation Portfolio Councillor Stephen Moriarty said the upgrade was a big win for Canungra.
"Thanks to Council's funding of $90,000, the courts are safer, smoother and better than ever for both casual and social players," he said.
"It is hoped coaching and fixtures will soon be available at the courts."
The upgrade included the removal of weeds, tree roots, and old sealant from the cracks and joints, before pressure-washing and grinding back of the court surfaces to eliminate old glue and flaking areas. Significant cracks were repaired, and uneven spots were smoothed out to prevent water from pooling.
A brand-new synthetic grass surface was also installed.
Finally, the new courts feature clear white line markings, and a special sand infill to improve playability.
"Moriarty Park has long been at the heart of local sport in Canungra," Cr Moriarty said.
"The reopening event was a celebration not only of new facilities, but also of the community spirit that keeps Canungra strong.
"Council is proud to support facilities that encourage health, fun, and community connection.”
The facility was established in 1983 after Dick and Pam Moriarty generously donated land from their family farm to create a community sporting space.
Cr Moriarty paid tribute to the many dedicated local volunteers who, with the support of Council, have kept Moriarty Park the focal point for sport and recreation in Canungra for more than 40 years.
