Scenic Rim Regional Council, in partnership with the Youth and Community Centre Beaudesert Inc (YACC) and Police-Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) Queensland, is progressing plans for a new sporting precinct at Dick Westerman Park in Beaudesert.

Scenic Rim Mayor Tom Sharp said the proposed development was an important step toward improving community wellbeing and increasing opportunities for active lifestyles across all ages.

“In 2023, Council engaged with the community about a proposed Land Management Plan for Dick Westerman Park, including the establishment of a new PCYC facility,” Cr Sharp said.

“A total of 59 submissions were received, most of which were positive, and it was great to see that level of enthusiasm from both the public and private sectors, all keen to see new recreational infrastructure in the Scenic Rim.”

In March 2024, the Department of Resources approved the Land Management Plan for the park.

Council subsequently secured $4.75 million in funding from the Queensland Government’s 2024–2027 South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program to develop a new indoor multi-sport facility in the Beaudesert region.

Scenic Rim's Sport and Recreation Portfolio Councillor Stephen Moriarty said Council was in the early planning stages for a draft concept plan, which includes the PCYC facility on the eastern side of Hopkins Place and the indoor multi-sport facility on the western side.

"The proposed sports precinct aligns with the Scenic Rim Sport and Recreation Plan 2024–2034, which aims to boost participation in sport and recreation across the region," Cr Moriarty said.

The concept for the indoor multi-sport facility includes multiple indoor courts suitable for sports like basketball, enclosed changerooms and amenities, and a design suitable for local and potentially regional competitions.

The draft Land Management Plan also outlines current and future land uses such as the Beaudesert Community Arts and Information Centre, the monthly public markets, and the proposed PCYC facility.

“As the trustee, Council’s role is to prepare the Land Management Plan and facilitate a tenure agreement with PCYC Queensland for this important development,” Cr Moriarty said.

"Community members are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed uses for Dick Westerman Park."

Minister for Local Government, Water and Volunteers Ann Leahy said community input would ensure that the sporting facility that would be built at Dick Westerman Park would be well supported by the community and better match the community's needs.

"Identifying what the community wants is a great first step, and the funding for this facility will also ensure that our remote and regional communities are liveable and appealing to everyone in the community.

"Living in a remote and regional town should not mean making a sacrifice on the facilities you have access to," Minister Leahy said.
