HAVE YOUR SAY ON LOCAL PARK'S NAME

Scenic Rim Regional Council is asking Tamborine Mountain residents to have their say on the naming of a local landmark.

Chief Executive Officer Jon Gibbons said Council had recently advertised that it is seeking community feedback on the naming of the North Tamborine Park.

"The park has been known as Geissmann Oval by the community and residents for some time, however current Council records indicate the 'formal' name of the park area is different," he said.

"Through our records, the park's official name is North Tamborine Park, and back in 1991, the Beaudesert Council at the time resolved not to officially change the name to Geissmann Oval.

"The name is indicated on the sign at the park, which has been in place for many years, however we are very supportive of formally renaming the park as a tribute to the Geissmann family, as well as recognising the community already colloquially calls the park by this name.

"The name Geissmann Oval recognises the Geissmann family who were early pioneers on the mountain and contributed to the local community, so it's only fitting they are formally recognised."

Council had recently advertised in all local papers asking for community feedback on the proposal to rename the sports oval area to Geissmann Oval, however Mr Gibbons said it was important to clarify there was more than one option.

"Residents are welcome to consider a number of options including, renaming the sports oval only to Geissmann Oval or renaming the entire park area (including the skate park, playground, public toilets and barbecue area) to Geissmann Oval, or to have the park remain known as North Tamborine Park.

"While we're very grateful for the responses we have already received, we have extended the closing date for feedback to Friday 6 March to ensure everyone has the opportunity to be involved."

Feedback can be sent to Council's offices at 82 Brisbane Street Beaudesert 4285 or by email at mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au
