Subway owner Chris Pietrobon has gained new interest for employment opportunities at the World of Work

Community members and school students flocked to the Scenic Rim Business and Careers Expo at the Beaudesert Showgrounds yesterday to find out more about local jobs and career pathways.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the energy at the “World of Work’ event was truly fantastic as job seekers, students, local businesses and employment support agencies connected in the one location.

"Yesterday, we started new conversations, and that's what we were aiming to do with this event," he said.

"With 33 exhibitors in total, there was a range of interactive displays including large equipment such as turf cutters, paragliders and heavy vehicles, as well as virtual reality technology.

"Through the event, new doors have been unlocked for our young people and I understand there has already been a number of employment outcomes generated from the day."

Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain Subway owner, Chris Pietrobon, said the outcomes for his business were amazing.

"As a local employer it was a great opportunity to be involved in the World of Work as we are always looking for motivated people to join our teams," he said.

"The event provided us exposure to a broad variety of employees from school-aged to mature-aged applicants.

"We had more than 20 people provide expressions of interest for future employment with us, with 60 per cent of those being school-aged and looking for part-time work or a traineeship.

"I will now work with the relevant school's industry liaison officers on these opportunities.

"I am also preparing to interview five people out of the 40 per cent aged over 18 who showed an interest in working at Subway, and have had another four people email in their resume.

"Aside from the employment opportunities, the World of Work also enabled us to network with employment organisations who are looking at placing local people with local businesses, which is vital in building confidence in the community.

"You could see the event was really well received by all the exhibitors and participants, and it was great to see the support from Council and Queensland Government to promote jobs in the community for community members."

Mayor Christensen said the connections and potential employment outcomes generated from the day were a win for the region.

"Connecting employers with local residents is a win for our local community, our local industries and for driving business confidence and employment growth," he said.

"Importantly it drives economic growth for the Scenic Rim, which helps to give us all a secure future."
