Local families and visitors to Canungra’s Moriarty Park can look forward to an improved play experience, with upgrades to the park now in full swing.

The playground has been temporarily closed while Council carries out improvements to the site which, following the reopening in June, will incorporate a new sandstone seating wall, a basket swing and an exciting new tower.

This will include an internal climbing net, enclosed slide, rope and climbing platform and a manipulative play panel as well as an external climbing net and musical play panel to keep children entertained and engaged.

Division 3 Councillor Stephen Moriarty, who is also Scenic Rim's Sport and Recreation Portfolio Councillor, said the park upgrades supported Council’s Playground Strategy 2019 which includes the renewal and improvement of equipment to maximise the play experience for the youngest members of the community.

“Council is committed to continuing to deliver projects that further develop vibrant towns and villages,” he said.

“This includes continuing to invest in playground designs and equipment that provide high play values – as outlined in Council’s Playground Strategy.

“Playgrounds provide many free and fun activities that enable children to develop, learn, grow and have fun in a safe setting.

"They also allow parents and carers to socialise and enjoy time outdoors.”

As a sports park and home to Canungra Pool, Moriarty Park already has several facilities which are at the heart of community life.

These include picnic shelters, a basketball half court, skate park, off-leash dog area, managed sports ground and exercise equipment.

Upgrades to the tennis court, with resurfacing and lighting, as well as new field lighting, supported through Council’s Sport and Recreation Plan 2024-2034, are planned for completion at the end of the year.

Works at the playground, on the far side of the park, will generally occur between 6.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday and may include Saturday works when required.

Council acknowledges that there may be some inconvenience to local residents and pedestrians during the playground works.

Any enquiries regarding the works should be directed to Council on 5540 5111 or by email to mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au quoting ‘Moriarty Park Playground upgrade’.
