The Scenic Rim has welcomed 27 new Australians at a special citizenship ceremony in celebration of Australian Citizenship Day.

Scenic Rim residents who have come from Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, South Africa, Belgium and South Korea pledged their commitment to Australia and were warmly received into the Scenic Rim community by Mayor Tom Sharp and Councillors yesterday.

Mayor Sharp said the new citizens, who have chosen to make their homes across the Scenic Rim region, join a proud tradition of migration that continues to shape Australia's identity.

“Today is one of the most uplifting occasions in our civic calendar," Cr Sharp said.

"It reminds us to reflect on the meaning of citizenship, the responsibilities it carries, and the privilege of calling this country home."

Cr Sharp said the ceremony also acknowledged the contributions of its new citizens, and highlighted how they improve the community.

"We look forward to the energy, skills and cultural richness they bring, and the roles they will play as neighbours, colleagues, volunteers and friends," he said.

"To our newest Aussies, we say thank you for choosing the Scenic Rim as your home.

"While we come from many cultures and speak many languages, it is our shared identity as Australians that brings us together.

"We welcome you into the vibrant, diverse society we all share, and wish you the very best for your life in Australia."

First celebrated in 2001, Australian Citizenship Day was established as an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on the importance of Australian citizenship and the responsibilities and privileges it offers.

September 17 was the chosen date as it marks the anniversary of the 1973 renaming of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 which became the Australian Citizenship Act 1948.
