Scenic Rim Regional Council will soon seek expressions of interest from potential partners who can help progress their next generation waste management and resource recovery approach.

Council is looking to connect with interested partners who can help fulfil the potential of the plan to strengthen the sustainability of practices and future solutions for moving from waste to a circular economy. This will lead to considerations about all of Council's existing waste operations.

Mayor Greg Christensen is optimistic this process is a significant step to improve and expand service delivery to the community and support the objectives of the recently launched South-East Queensland Waste Management Plan.

“Council's Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2021 – 2026 sets out very clear targets that align with the Queensland Government's vision for the next ten years of what waste reduction looks like and working towards zero waste to landfill.

“Through this process Council will also understand what options are available to process food scraps and garden waste - this type of waste currently accounts for, on average, 40% of kerbside waste collected in the Scenic Rim.

“Understanding the options for recovery of these valuable organic materials will allow Council to progress our plans to deliver a service supporting our community to divert these materials from landfill for use in regenerative applications. Removing organic wastes from landfill is a big step in building circular economy within the region.

“Focusing on resource recovery, and implementing emerging technologies is also a very exciting part of this transition out of a linear economy into a low-emissions circular economy.

"We know that the generation, collection, recycling and disposal of waste continue to evolve and change rapidly in response to community expectations, legislative changes, national and international economic conditions, and technological advances.

“Council is committed to maximising the value of all assets. We can see significant value for our region in expanding our operations at the Bromelton Waste Facility in the first instance, through best-practice waste management and circular economy solutions,” he said.

“Importantly, we want to maintain the natural beauty of the Scenic Rim.”

Mayor Christensen said the landfill at Bromelton is licenced to accept up to 200,000 tonnes of waste a year but that it was important to consider the opportunities the site offers through collaborating with industry, and explore opportunities and technologies to enhance recovery, reuse and repurposing of materials that otherwise end up in landfills.

"We must explore how we can support our community to reduce waste and divert waste from landfill, accommodating our growing population and economic prosperity in the Scenic Rim. I am excited to invite partners to 'think outside the box' to work with us growing services to our community and the South East Queensland region," he said.

Council will continue to update the community as the Expression of Interest process progresses.
